Can a melody of sighs and desire be born from deep jealousy... and end up defying the censorship of the Vatican itself? In 1967, Serge Gainsbourg recorded the intimate original version with Brigitte Bardot, but she begged to hide it fearing scandal. Upon meeting Jane Birkin, she discovered the hidden track and, consumed by jealousy, refused to let any other woman enter the booth with him. Jane sang an octave higher than usual, giving the suggestive murmurs a transgressive edge that captured the world's imagination. Whispers spread that the recorded passion was real; sound engineers joked that if so, it would have been an infinite record. Banned across half of Europe, the Pope went as far as to excommunicate the Italian distributor, becoming the song's most unexpected promoter. Eclesiastical censorship propelled it to number one worldwide. Was it pure provocation, or the most sincere art of their lives?
